Day for Cultural Diversity – Together we enrich each other’s world!
Today is the Day for Cultural Diversity, which just so happens to be our KinderRijk year theme! This makes it a special day for us. We strongly believe that every child, parent and staff member should feel welcome at our care locations.
Why a Day for Cultural Diversity?
Every year on May 21, UNESCO organises the International Day for Cultural Diversity and explains that on this day, we reflect on the significance and understanding of the values of cultural diversity and how we can live together. This makes it easier for people of different cultures to interact with each other.
Space for every child!
KinderRijk’s educational vision focuses on giving children space to grow, learn and develop in their own way, at their own pace and with an outlook of the future: independent, sustainable, peaceful and self-aware.
Children learn from one another and develop skills that will be useful in the future as they become acquainted with people from various cultures and backgrounds. It enables children to empathise with others more effectively, it fosters mutual understanding, and by getting to know each other, children discover that they often have more in common than they realise at first glance.
How do we enrich each other’s world at KinderRijk?
Space for every child equals space for every culture. Children need to be able to recognise themselves and therefore feel safe in the group. What does this include? Some examples are: celebrating (religious) festivals, bringing objects that are used at home and displaying them prominently in the home corner, involving parents in theme-based activities and providing skin-coloured crayons in more than 10 shades.
This year, we are using four themes in cultural diversity:
– Furnishings & materials
– Communication & language
– Food & drink
– Music & dance
Cultural diversity is also addressed in the teams. One of our core values is ‘Together’, which highlights being open to others, seeking connection and inspiring one another.
